A Parent's Guide to Verifying ABA Insurance Coverage

Insurance is one of the biggest sources of stress for families starting ABA therapy — the terminology alone can be a lot to take in. Here's what actually happens when we verify your benefits, and the terms worth knowing along the way.
How Verification Works
Share Your Plan Details
Tell us your insurance provider and a bit about your child — takes about two minutes.
We Contact Your Insurer
Our team verifies your benefits directly with your insurance company on your behalf.
You Get a Clear Breakdown
We walk you through exactly what's covered, what to expect for costs, and next steps.
“We verify your exact benefits before therapy starts, so there are no surprises.”
What's Often Covered
- Behavior assessments and treatment planning
- 1:1 ABA therapy sessions (home, center, or school)
- Parent training sessions
- Periodic progress evaluations
Good to Know
- Coverage details vary by plan and employer
- Some plans require a diagnosis or prior authorization
- Co-pays and deductibles depend on your specific policy
- We handle authorization paperwork with you, not for you to figure out alone
Virginia's Autism Insurance Law
Virginia state law (§ 38.2-3418.17) requires state-regulated individual and group health plans to cover diagnosis and treatment of autism spectrum disorder, including ABA therapy, for individuals of any age. ABA coverage carries a statutory annual cap of $35,000, though federal parity law may limit how that cap is applied — and self-funded employer plans aren't required to follow this state law. This is general information, not a guarantee of your specific plan's coverage — we verify your exact benefits during intake.
Questions to Ask Your Insurer
If you want to call your insurance company yourself before (or alongside) our verification, these questions cover the basics:
- Does my plan cover Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy?
- Is there an annual dollar or visit cap on ABA benefits?
- Do I need a referral or prior authorization before starting?
- What's my deductible, and has any of it been met this year?
- Are Brivana Health's providers in-network with my plan?
Don't worry if this feels like a lot — you don't have to sort it out alone. Share your plan details with us and our team will handle the verification and walk you through exactly what it means for your family.
